Understanding when and how you qualify is essential to avoiding delays, penalties, or gaps in coverage.

Age-Based Medicare Eligibility
Most people qualify for Medicare when they turn 65 years old.
You are eligible if you:
Are age 65 or older
Are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
Have lived in the U.S. for at least 5 continuous years
Eligibility is typically tied to your work history or your spouse’s work history.
Work History Requirements
To qualify for premium-free Part A, you generally need:
40 work credits (about 10 years of work)
If you do not meet this requirement, you may still qualify but may have to pay a monthly premium.
Eligibility Under Age 65
You may qualify for Medicare before age 65 if you have:
A qualifying disability
Been receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) for 24 months
Once you meet these conditions, you are automatically enrolled in Medicare.
Eligibility for Specific Conditions
Some individuals qualify for Medicare regardless of age due to certain conditions, including:
End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
These conditions have special rules for when coverage begins.
When You Become Eligible
Your Medicare eligibility begins during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP).
This period includes:
3 months before your 65th birthday
Your birthday month
3 months after your birthday month
Enrolling during this window helps you avoid late enrollment penalties.
