When Can You Change Medicare Advantage Plans?
You cannot change your Medicare Advantage plan at any time. Changes are only allowed during specific enrollment periods set by Medicare.
Understanding these timeframes helps you avoid gaps in coverage and ensures you can make changes when needed.
👉 Start here: How to Choose a Medicare Advantage Plan
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA OEP)
The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs:
January 1 to March 31 each year
During this time, if you are already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can:
Switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan
Return to Original Medicare (and add Part D if needed)
You can make one change during this period.
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)
The Annual Enrollment Period runs:
October 15 to December 7 each year
During AEP, you can:
Join a Medicare Advantage plan
Switch plans
Drop Medicare Advantage and return to Original Medicare
Add or change Part D coverage
This is the most flexible and commonly used enrollment period.
